Instagram influencers are being paid in USDC

A few days ago, Meta (formerly Facebook) started paying content creators (also known as influencers) in certain countries (Colombia and the Philippines at the moment) in USDC, the stablecoin issued by Circle.

That may seem insignificant, but it is actually a seismic shift for the financial world. Thanks to the companies in its portfolio (including WhatsApp and Instagram), Meta has access to 3 billion users worldwide and can therefore very easily promote crypto globally if it wishes. That would come at the expense of the US dollar.

3 billion

As of this week, Meta is paying influencers in certain countries in USDC for content creation. It is a pilot project by Mark Zuckerberg to see how significant the impact of his future proprietary stablecoin will be. That is why Circle’s USDC is currently still being used while Meta develops its own digital coin.

With around 3 billion users across his various companies, the launch of Meta’s own stablecoin could cause a seismic shift in the banking world.

Zuckerberg previously attempted to launch a stablecoin as well (in 2019) but was opposed by the banking industry at the time.

Later this week, the US Congress will vote on the so-called Clarity Act, which will bring most crypto transactions in line with regular financial transactions in the United States, meaning that stablecoin issuers can essentially act like banks in the long term.
