Hacking the Labour leader to launch your own cryptocoin is not very profitable

Hacking a celebrity’s account on X to commit a crypto scam is nothing new. But when you do it to a well-known politician in the UK, the payoff can be much smaller than you think. This week, the X account of Lucy Powell, Speaker of the House of Commons, one of the two branches of the British parliament, was hacked to promote a cryptocurrency. The payoff, however, was disappointing.

The origins of the Twitter crypto scams lie in the Covid era, already five years ago. During those first months of ‘lockdown’, a group of young people hacked the accounts of many celebrities on X (formerly known as Twitter) such as Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, MrBeast, Michael Bloomberg, Warren Buffett, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West;.
Not much later, all those accounts sent the same Tweet. Send Bitcoin to this address and you will get the amount back, doubled.
The hackers made millions of dollars in just a few minutes. A global manhunt followed. Just few months later, they were all arrested.
The hack became world famous and got it’s own Wikipedia account.

An unknown hacker probably thought that Lucy Powell, the female Speaker of the House of Commons and a very famous Labour politician, could have the same influence. Her account was hacked on April 15th and a promotional message for a new cryptocurrency called ‘HCC’ was tweeted. Lucy, unfortunately for the hacker, apparently doesn’t have many crypto-savvy followers among her 80,000 social media fans. An investigation showed that the hacker only made about $500 in the two hours he had control of her account.
