Czech government barely survives Bitcoin scandal

The Czech Republic’s ruling coalition narrowly avoided collapse this week after a high-profile Bitcoin scandal that began two weeks ago which led to a vote of no confidence against the government.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s center-right coalition won 98 votes, just ahead of the 94 MPs who voted to bring down the government instead.
Donation
Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek, from Prime Minister Petr Fiala’s conservative Civic Democratic Party (ODS), almost caused the government’s fall. He was forced to resign after a €40 million Bitcoin donation to the ministry was auctioned off in exchange for cash donated by a convicted drug dealer at a public auction.
The digital tokens were given to him by Tomáš Jiřikovský, who previously ran an illegal darknet drug market and was in prison for embezzlement, drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons. Czech newspaper Deník N reported that police investigated the donation, prompting the justice minister to resign.
Vote
So what started as a Bitcoin donation from a convicted darknet drug dealer to a justice minister spiraled into a political storm, leading to a resignation, a criminal investigation, and the near downfall of the entire Czech government. The latest vote was already the fourth no-confidence vote since the ruling coalition came to power in 2021.
