Crypto Hacks breaking all records in 2025

Last Updated on 30 June 2025 by CryptoTips.eu

The first half of the year is almost over and although Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) are doing very well, we’ve also seen a record number of hacks. Crypto is becoming more and more mainstream and hackers are adapting to this. Research from TRM Labs shows that 2025 is well on its way to breaking all records in terms of money stolen.

Bybit and Coinbase

A grim record. The numbers from TRM Labs are clear: 2025 is already a record year for crypto hackers (which of course makes sense given the high price of various cryptocurrencies).

With over $2.1 billion in thefts in the first half of the year, hackers are shaking up the crypto industry. The Bybit hack in February, attributed to North Korean hacker group Lazarus, alone accounts for almost 70% of the annual losses and clearly contributes to the bad figures of the first half of 2025.

But Bybit is no exception, the American Coinbase platform was also hacked earlier this year.

Tens of millions of dollars are siphoned off from wallets and platforms every month. On average, each hack nets cybercriminals almost $30 million, an amount that is significantly higher than in the same period in 2024.

Faced with this growing threat, crypto companies want more cooperation between companies in the crypto sector, the various international law enforcement agencies and financial intelligence agencies.

On the other hand, they also want to be extremely free to trade. This is of course a double-edged sword.
