Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi was asked last week whether he would, just as Tesla, accept Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies as payment for a ride or food delivery. The Silicon Valley company that has changed the way people commute admitted they were studying the option and would roll it out in time.

Uber meanwhile continues to develop Uber Elevate, its department that will roll out flying taxis in the next few years. If all goes well and regulators don’t block any cryptocurrency development, the iGen (or Generation-Z as we call them) will be able to pay for their flying Uber in Bitcoin by 2025 or so.

If you do not see the direct connection between Uber and crypto, think of this. Some 10 percent of millennials living in US cities have already given up car owning in exchange for car sharing (Uber, Lyft and others), which is the same percentage of them that are invested in crypto (whether that’s Bitcoin, Cardano, Ethereum or any other coin of course).

Now imagine how much more that percentage will be multiplied for the iGen. Can you imagine the impact on car manufacturers and banks?

Mahabharata

The first ever mention of a flying mode of transportation was in the sacred Indian text the Mahabharata, which speaks of a great war and the need for battle. At the time, it spoke about flying wheeled chariots pulled by animals, usually horses, as a mode of transportation.

Fast forward a few thousands of years and in the 1990s we saw Rutger Hauer play next to Harrison Ford in the futuristic tale of Blade Runner. Once again, flying cars were present. Bit closer to our ear was Back to the Future which featured a flying DeLorean.

And now, Uber is almost ready to roll out their electric vertical take-off and landing machines or eVTOLs as they want to promote them.

eVTOLs

Almost in business terms means within the next five years. So get ready to pay for your Uber flying taxi, or eVTOLs, in crypto by 2025 we guess?

Asked about the possibility of accepting crypto as payment, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi confirmed that he would, stating:

Just like we accept all kinds of local currency, we are going to look at cryptocurrency and/or bitcoin in terms of currency to transact,

That’s good for business. That’s good for our riders and our eaters. That we’ll certainly look at and if there’s a benefit there, if there’s a need there, we’ll do it.

Already I wonder how many Satoshis the ride to work is gonna set me back. An interesting future to look forward to.
