Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong highlighted the growing discontent of app developers with Apple’s leadership when he stated, in a series of tweets, that the Steve Jobs founded company is stifling growth as it blocks access to apps allowing you to earn crypto or apps related to DeFi.

The series of tweets that Brian sent out highlight the fact that Apple wants to control which apps are allowed to run on its iOS software.

Brian stated:

Here is the issue. Apple has told us we cannot add the following functionality in our iOS apps: (1) the ability to earn money using cryptocurrency and (2) the ability to access decentralized finance apps (sometimes called DeFi apps or Dapps).

He then continued to explain how Coinbase, which is highly popular in the US, had tried proposing several solutions to Apple but was rebuffed at every stage. Commenters stated that the only reason Apple was being difficult about granting access to DeFi Apps, or even regular crypto apps for that matter, is because it aims to launch its own crypto eventually.

Spotify example

In the past, Apple has for this same reason gotten into an argument with Spotify, which it claimed was holding back it’s very own Apple Music app. Spotify started legal proceedings against Apple in order to be allowed on its app store again, so far without any conclusive result.

Brian Armstrong meanwhile used another example to try and further his point, reminding Apple that Microsoft had a similar issue in the past, when it forced Windows users to use the Microsoft browser only and not innovative ones like the Google Chrome Browser or Apple’s Safari Browser.

This is not the first time Brian has criticized Apple over its policies versus crypto apps, as he also stated on 22 August:

Apple has been very restrictive and hostile to cryptocurrency over the years. They’re still blocking some functionality right now, including the ability to earn money with cryptocurrency by completing tasks, and unrestricted dapp browsers.

As Apple fans, we’re all waiting to see how this one will turn out.
