Wall Street company wants HODL as ticker for new Bitcoin fund

‘Tickers’ are very important for stock exchanges and shares all over the world. It helps promote the company’s recognizability and ensures that stock traders know clearly which share is being discussed in the press. In US business articles, any company is accompanied by its ticker.

1929

This is because long before the internet existed, stock market traders received their news via a so-called ‘ticker’ machine, a printed ribbon that gave them an overview of the day’s stock market quotations.

For example, in an old episode of The Simpsons there is a very nice clip of just such a stock ‘ticker’. You see Mr Burns checking the stock prices. Apparently the last time he checked it was just before the 1929 crash so he’s not too happy with the results.

Apple’s ticker is AAPL, Microsoft’s is MSFT.

A well-known Wall Street investment firm called Van Eck announced earlier this week that if their Bitcoin ETF (exchange traded fund) is approved, they would like the name ‘HODL’ as the stock market ticker for the first Bitcoin fund.

Gamekyuubi

Van Eck is of course just one of many companies on Wall Street eager to win the race to launch the first Bitcoin ETF. Crypto fans would find it hilarious if HODL won of course.

The term refers to a well-known spelling mistake from the early years of Bitcoin.

Back in December 2013, a person who introduced himself with the moniker Gamekyuubi wanted to report on the very first Bitcoin Forum that he had invested in the new coin (which at the time was still trading at a few cents per coin only). He incorrectly typed “I AM HODLING” instead of “HOLDING,” and the typo became legendary.

Since then, every time there is a new crash, crypto fans have been encouraging each other to HODL, and above all, not to panic.
