After American Football, the NBA and the European Champions League jumped on the Bitcoin bandwagon, it was clear that the Premier League would follow suit.

This is exactly what happened this week when Premier League club Southampton FC signed their newest sponsorship agreement, the biggest in their history so far.

Coingaming Group has now offered to pay the players performance bonuses in Bitcoin.

Southampton declared that the new deal “also includes the option for the club to be paid certain performance-based bonuses in Bitcoin at the end of each season, allowing the club the opportunity to take advantage of the new, high-growth currency if it feels it will bring significant future benefits”.

Fans and commentators already wonder which other Premier League team will follow suit.

Chiliz

Sports and crypto looks like a successful marriage in 2021 after it was reported earlier how the NBA teams the Sacramento Kings and the Dallas Mavericks embraced crypto and how NFL player Russell Okung demanded that at least 50% of his salary be paid in Bitcoin.

The biggest winner so far though is still Chiliz and their club tokens which allow soccer fans to buy into the different clubs they support and see their investment rise as the club does well.

The Socios.com platform also aims to allow fans to buy tokenized voting rights for the teams they support. Given that both Juventus and Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League stages before the quarter finals this year the interest for Chiliz has lagged somewhat in recent weeks but the coin is still showing a very impressive ROI so far.
