Japanese memecoin crashes after prime minister denies link

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is extremely popular and has recently achieved a historic election victory. A crypto developer therefore launched Sanae Coin, a memecoin that was bearing her image, this past weekend. Buyers were immediately attracted to the new memecoin. That enthusiasm faded after the Prime Minister herself posted a message on X declaring that she had no involvement with the new cryptocurrency “Sanae Token” and warning voters about potential misinformation about it.

The currency quickly plummeted in value, losing some 85% of its peak price.

On February 25, Japanese YouTube channel NoBorder, a social media platform featuring political content by Japanese entrepreneur Yuji Mizoguchi, announced its intention to launch the “sanae coin” in honor of the “Japan is Back” slogan Takaichi adopted from her mentor, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Although the memecoin’s website contained a disclaimer clearly stating that it was “not affiliated with or endorsed by Ms. Takaichi,” the project quickly drew criticism, with some users calling it “misleading” because of the depiction of Ms Takaichi on the coin.

The confusion intensified after another popular X account, which described itself as the prime minister’s “officially recognized” support group, reshared NoBorder’s announcement.
