Ether is the big crypto loser of the Trump tariffs

If we look at crypto prices after the most irregular stock market week of the last decade, we notice that Bitcoin has remained fairly stable while Ethereum incurred a loss of some 10%. That is striking. Furthermore, Ethereum could never get close to its 2021 ATH in recent months, while Bitcoin did.

Where did it go wrong for Vitalik Buterin and his ‘merge’? That promised ‘flippening’ also seems to be getting ever further away.

Merge

The now 31-year-old Vitalik Buterin is, partly due to the anonymity of Satoshi Nakamoto, one of the most legendary people in the world of crypto. The man developed Ether in his teenage years and is now regarded as a legend by anyone who deals in digital currencies. He is the youngest billionaire in the crypto world, is considered a genius by investors and was once nicknamed V-God in China (where many young people often illegally convert their savings into Bitcoin and Ethereum).

During the bull run of 2020 and 2021, rumors swirled about the ‘flippening’, the moment when the market value of Ether would take over that of Bitcoin. After all, crypto fans were convinced that Ether, due to all the technological upgrades it would still experience in the future, would soon take over Bitcoin’s role as king of crypto.

In August 2022, ‘the merge’ took place, the most important technological upgrade in cryptoland in years. Ethereum transformed itself from a proof of work to a proof of stake cryptocoin.

That transition, which drastically reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption, went fairly smoothly but did not achieve the hoped-for higher price, also because the major crypto platform FTX went bankrupt a month later and sent a shock wave through the markets. Even during the bull run of 2024, Ether was unable to repeat its 2021 price record, while Bitcoin continued to seek higher places. In 2025, it therefore seems more likely to us that XRP will one day take over the role of Ether as the second largest crypto coin, instead of the latter ever threatening Bitcoin’s role as the king of crypto. It is difficult to say why Ether never managed to threaten Bitcoin, but Vitalik certainly seemed to lack charisma. Investors prefer the anonymity of Satoshi over the silent Vitalik, and Bitcoin is consistently preferred over Ether.
